Buhari Can be Impeachment If an Offence is Established, NBA Boss

Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Aguata branch, one of the eight branches of NBA in Anambra state, Dr. Chima Joseph Ubanyionwu has urged the National Assembly to initiate an impeachment process against President Muhammadu Buhari if he has really committed an impeachment offence.

Reacting to the recent ex-parte order handed down by a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, presided over by Justice Maureen Onyetenu, following a motion filed before her by the Chairman of NBA, Ilesa branch, Kanmi Ajibola; and a human rights activist, Suleiman Adeniyi, based on some alleged constitutional breaches, Ubanyionwu noted that since there are laid down procedures, the national assembly should in commencing the impeachment process, be guided by due process of law.

The new NBA boss, who spoke at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Bar Centre, Ekwulobia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra state, weekend, while taking over the mantle of leadership of NBA, Aguata branch from the out-going chairman, Clifford Iloegbune Okoye, said the National Assembly should first investigate the alleged breaches against Buhari and if they find him culpable, they should not hesitate to follow the laid down procedures in handling his matter, adding that in doing so, there should be no sacred cow syndrome in their oversight functions.

He also condemned the wanton killings going on in various parts of the country and urged the security agencies to rise up to the challenges by arresting and prosecuting all the culprits involved in the shedding of blood of innocent Nigerians.

He however commended the Okoye-led out-going executive for piloting the affairs of the Bar in a peaceful and transparent manner, with accountability as their watchword, adding that in his own case, he would run the affairs of NBA with an open door policy and at the same time, maintain the standards already laid down by his predecessors.

Ubanyionwu further stated that all forms of corrupt practices and malpractices would not be tolerated throughout the duration of his tenure, adding that all the members would vote for candidates of their choice during the forthcoming NBA national convention where all the new NBA national officer are expected to be elected in a free and fair exercise.

Other elected members of the Ubanyionwu-led eight-member executive included Chinwe Okonkwo-Okom, Vice chairman; Chukwuanugo Offor, Secretary; Obiora Anebere, Assistant Secretary; Answer Nnenna Okoya N., Welfare Officer; Anayo Ernest Egbo, Treasurer; Chukwu Kingsley Idenyi, Financial Secretary and Duke Ezeonwuka, PRO.

Earlier in his hand over note, the out-going chairman, Okoye had explained that during his tenure, he maintained peace and harmony, acquired land for Aguata NBA at Lawyers’ Estate, Mgbakwu, furnished the Bar Centre, organised a successful Bar Week, maintained peaceful transition that brought in Ubanyionwu and above all, worked towards the carving out of Orumba South Judicial Division from the present Aguata Judicial Division.

He therefore urged his successor to maintain the existing cordial relationship among the members on one side, the Bar and the Bench on the other hand, as well as the tempo of development, such as the development of the newly acquired Lawyers’ Estate, for the interest of the members.
