Borno Governor Threatens to Pull Down Structures Blocking Waterways, Drainages

Governor Babagana Umara of Borno State has said that his government will soon begin the pulling down of structures blocking the waterways and drainages in the state.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Usman Kadafur, at the symbolic flag-off of sanitation exercise in the state, said the reason for the result of flooding especially in the state capital, Maiduguri, was because many of the waterways have been blocked by illegal structures.

The governor, who noted that the present administration decided to reintroduced the monthly sanitary in order to prevent the seasonal outbreak of waterborne diseases and other sanitary connected ailments, said it was imperative to reintroduce the exercise suspended 26 years ago during the military era.

He said the government has decided to take cases of environmental sanitation important and was ready to prosecute offenders of sanitation rule.

He asked the residents of the state to embrace the reintroduced exercise, stressing that health is wealth, and that they stand to benefit greatly from clean environment.

Also speaking at the flag off, the Borno State Commissioner of Environment, Engr. Kabiru Wanori said: “It is a known fact that a clean environment is essential for healthy living, therefore it is paramount to keep our environment clean to avert the spread of communicable disease caused as a result of filthy environment.”

“The issues of sanitation exercise in the past had been popularly known in the state as Ojo-Kojo, which was linked to military regime but with the coming of the present administration it is found absolutely necessary to re-introduce the sanitation exercise in the state for healthy living.

“Therefore we all need to support the concerted effort of the present administration towards maintenance of a clean environment.”
