- Police investigate motive •Northern Traders Association appeals to govt to enhance security presence •
The Rivers State Police Command is investigating the killing of four traders of northern extraction Friday at the Orazi axis of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.
Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the incident said the command, has deployed a patrol vehicle to the area to maintain social order.
“We have deployed our men to investigate the motive and circumstances that may have led to the attack. Our men are talking to them not to resort to reprisal attacks but to allow the Police to do its job.”
The Police spokesman assured: “Justice will be done to all. The law enforcement agencies and the Police will not relent in tracking down those responsible for these killings. We are gathering the details to enable us identify what could have led to killings.”
Chairman of the Northern Traders Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, Usman Makarfi, expressed sadness over the death of his members, saying the government needs to do more to prevent killings in Rivers State.
“This is very sad. We were together from 11.am to 4. pm. Government should do something to stop this killings. Election is coming and some politicians see election as a do-or-die affair which shouldn’t be.”
A family member of one the victims charged the Police to unravel the motive behind the killings as well as identify those who perpetrated the act.
“We are traders and not politicians. We are not involved in politics. We go about our businesses without interfering in politics. As traders we relate with all members of the society.”
It was learnt the remains of the four victims have been taken to Bauchi State for proper burial according to Muslim rites.
