Two time African champions, Enyimba International Football Club of Aba on Wednesday climbed to the top of CAF Confederation Cup Group C after defeating visiting Williamsville AC by a slim 1-0 in the second tier of the continental club competition.
Enyimba who are currently fourth on the table in the domestic league before the league was suspended after rounds of 24 games in the Nigerian Professional Football League due the global football fiesta in Russia forced a slim 1-0 win over visiting Williamsville on Wednesday evening in a CAF Confederation Cup group game played in Port Harcourt.
The Aba-based people’s Elephant did not hid their intention to win the match as they started from the blast of the whistle firing from all cylinders and in the 7th minute, their effort paid off as striker Ibrahim Mustapha connected from a cross to hit home the solitary goal.
The win came as a relief to Enyimba who lost their second match 3-0 to Cara Brazzaville in Congo and as a result, therefore, needed the win, which ensured they moved to top of Group C.
The win came as a surprise to many as Aba millionaires have been without a coach after the sacking of Paul Aigbogun, who is currently the Flying Eagles coach.
Williamsville AC host Enyimba in the second-leg on July 29 at the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan.
It is recalled that the chairman of the club Chief Felix Anyansi Agwu recently told journalists that things are hard for them which is perhaps the reason they are yet to appoint a replacement for Paul Aigbogun after parting ways with the coach.
