Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has encouraged the 2018 Batch B Stream 1 corps members posted to the state to conduct themselves properly during their assigned duties in the forthcoming general elections in 2019, and make the nation proud during their service year.
Speaking on Thursday during the swearing in of corps member at the NYSC orientation camp in Ikot Itie Udung, Nsit Atai Local Government Area, the governor urged the corps members to emulate their predecessors, who had passed through the orientation in the past.
He charged them to open up their minds and embrace new ideas during the three weeks orientation programme, and take their orientation course in the camp very serious, as they would be exposed to various training.
Emmanuel, who was represented by Mr. Monday Uko, Commissioner for Youths and Sports, said the state government would continue to support the National Youth Service Corps scheme towards the realization of its mandate.
He stated that the promise to upgrade facilities in the orientation camp would soon be accomplished.
“Your experience in this environment in the days ahead will definitely redefine your perception of the Nigerian State. I therefore charge you to open your minds to various issues and new ideas that you will be exposed to through activities such as lectures, drills, physical training, citizenship and leadership training.
“Your predecessors in the service, have in time past, done the nation proud in their participation in national assignments,” Emmanuel said.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator of NYSC, Mr Julius Amusan, revealed that out of the 2, 206 corps members deployed to the state, 2020 had been registered.
He added that 1, 002 males and 1,018 females have completed their registration as at Wednesday midnight, July 25.
Explaining that the corps members would be exposed to Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to prepare them for post service challenges, Amusan commended the state government for its support to the scheme and the corps members.
He urged the corps members to take all activities in the camp serious and respect all constituted authorities to enjoy their stay during the period.
He said, “Your Excellency sir, while we remain grateful to you for your various acts of benevolence towards the scheme in general and the corps members in particular.
“We humbly wish to remind Your Excellency of your promise to upgrade the existing facilities in the camp and complete the ongoing projects”.
