Akwa Ibom Sets Taskforce to Check Students Loitering

The Akwa Ibom State government has established a taskforce to check pupils and students loitering on the streets during school hours.

The taskforce is made up of persons from the Ministry of Education, Police and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and would start operations immediately schools reopen in September.

Speaking Sunday in Uyo, Commissioner for Education, Professor Victor Inoka said the task force was put in place in response to complaints from teachers that many students don’t attend classes.

He said the ministry has strengthened the monitoring and supervision of all public schools across the state, besides its effort in the development of physical infrastructure.

He noted that monitoring in public schools was to ensure that the teachers lived up to expectation, adding that the administration of Governor Udom Emmanuel was committed and determined in making quality education for students in the state a reality.

He explained that a list of approved private schools was being complied by the ministry and unregistering schools will be closed down.

“We are aware that some students, pupils, go to school and roam about. And people, teachers are complaining too that some students don’t go to classes. Without education nothing can work. The governor is passionate about how we can impart positively on the future generation.

“So from September we will be going round the whole schools in the state. It is going to be teamwork. The police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps will also be involved. Once it is 8, o’clock in the morning and we find you loitering, we pick you up.

“And so many private schools are springing up again in the state. We have got list of those we call illegal; they started operating without our approval. We are still compiling the list zone by zone and if we see those that don’t meet our standard we are going to close them down.

“Education experts have told us that there are two key variables paramount in achieving total quality education: the exogenous and endogenous variables. Exogenous variable is talking about physical infrastructure, renovation of facilities, classrooms and all that”.
